Here is the Real World Assignment that you will do with Mrs. Seely or Mrs. Jackson:

#1- Select what you would like to practice adding with from our basket of food and put the items in your shopping bag.

Your choices are:
10 apples
10 oranges
10 bananas

#2- Get 2 paper plates and a math tray to count your fruit on. Take all of you items and go to the math table with your teacher (she will have an activity sheet for you to write your answers on).

#3- Put your fruit on the tray and set up your 2 plates in front of you. On your activity sheet, you will see addition problems that all add up to the number 10 or below. Look at each carefully and count out how many objects you should put on each plate to solve the problem. For example, if you see 4+2= ___ then one plate would have 4 objects and one plate would have 2 objects on it.

#4-Now, add the objects together by counting all of the fruit on both plates. A good idea would be to count all of the fruit on one plate and then continue counting the fruit on the other plate. This is called counting on and it sounds like this: 1,2,3,4,5,6. You would count the 4 items and then keep counting the 2 more items.

#5- Do all of the addition problems on your activity sheet using your fruit to count with. Write the answers on your math activity sheet. After you have tried all of the addition questions, it is your turn to draw a math picture of your favorite addition problem that you did with the fruit today. Use the math picture sheet below to draw a picture to share with the class during math tomorrow. With your teacher's help, you can also write about your favorite part of this online project on the discussion tab above.

#6- At carpet time, you will be sharing what you know about how to add objects. You have 3 choices of ways to share what you have learned.
Pick ONE of the following to do:
1. Share your picture and tell your friends about your favorite addition fruit problem that you illustrated. Use your drawing to help you talk about how to add objects.
2. Using the real pieces of fruit, plates and tray; show your friends how to add fruit together. You can also ask your friends to give you addition problems for you to try with the fruit.
3. Go to the Math Expressions website at http://www.eduplace.com/kids/mthexp/gk/emanip.html. Show your friends how to count objects and add them together. Talk about what you are doing while you work on the addition problem on the computer and overhead.
